High Tide is a piece representing the duality of the vast ocean, from the violent and intense ferocity of the most powerful storms to the tranquil and silent stillness they disturb. The ebb and flow of the sea’s waves is illustrated with the long, undulating melodic lines passed between different sections. Surrounding them are the thundering storms created by the ensemble’s loud and fast introduction and finale. At its heart, a beautiful and calm moment of serenity creates a full portrait of the ocean.

 

This piece was commissioned by the Webb Bridge Middle School Bands under directors Kirk Stroud and Erick Stallings. As a former band student at the school, this program certainly played a huge part in fostering my passion for music at an early age, and I would not be who I am today without it! I’m so lucky to have had this opportunity to work with them and develop my understanding of composing for middle school band.
