Bioluminescence refers to the production of light by living organisms. Many different kinds of life emit light to some degree, including fireflies, jellyfish, mushrooms, squids, worms, and even microorganisms like plankton. However, the vast majority of bioluminescence occurs within a deep layer of the ocean called the Midnight Zone. This part of the ocean, scientifically referred to as the Bathypelagic Zone, is part of the largest habitat on the planet. Here, the depths of the ocean completely block out the sun, creating an ever-present darkness interrupted only by the glow of bioluminescent aquatic organisms. Light has evolved to become a critical tool for creatures who live in this part of the ocean, helping many organisms to survive against predators and to lure their own prey. Still, humans known startlingly little about this vast, unexplored frontier. Its mystery provides fascinating imagery to be painted by the low flute choir, which thrives within dark and rich timbres reminiscent of the Midnight Zone.
